One of the toughest questions to get asked is, “What shorts (or bib shorts) should I buy?.” Honestly, I have no idea. We’ll figure out, but right now I have no idea. I have no idea for several reasons: I don’t know what saddle you’re riding, I don’t know where you’re positioned on your saddle, I don’t know if you like a more compressive Lycra or less compressive, I don’t know the type of leg-gripper you’re used to, I don’t know what brand you’re happy (or not happy) with, I don’t know the inseam length you’re used to or like, and I definitely don’t know of the make-up of your gluteus maximus.

Cycling Gloves — to wear, or not to wear?
Posted in Cycling Apparel Info., Cycling Information, tagged apparel, cycling, cycling gloves on April 9, 2010 | 2 Comments »
I don’t wear cycling gloves. I don’t know why or how I got into the habit of not wearing gloves, but it’s not something I can easily change — I’ve tried. I know if I go down during a ride my hands are likely to get torn up, which is why this past weekend I brought a pair of gloves to the start line. (I figured that if I tore up my hands, typing and working on the computer wouldn’t work out so well, so I made what I thought was an adult decision.) I reached for the gloves in my back pockets, put them on my hands, quickly remembered why I didn’t like wearing gloves, took them off, and put them back into my pockets.

Lance Armstrong has the Midas touch when it comes to getting Americans psyched about cycling; Team RadioShack being his most recent touch of excellence. Once Lance won his first Tour de France wearing the UPSP kit, all of sudden everyone and their brother was wearing it on the local group ride. Next it was the Team Discovery kit that everyone was wearing. Then came LIVESTRONG. Not only did he bring the ruckus to the cycling industry, he brought the $1 cancer-benefiting wristband to the world! Now Nike and Lance are delivering the yellow-banded goods to athletes and non-athletes alike.

A ride with cold feet isn’t a good ride. It doesn’t matter if your legs are sweating, you’re wearing 2 layers too much on the top, and your head is wet with sweat from a balaclava — cold fee ruin the ride. Ruin it! It seems like hardcore winter cyclist have their very own “custom made” shoe cover that might include Duct Tape, maybe plastic baggies, chemical toe warmers, or maybe a combination of toe warmers with shoe covers. It doesn’t really matter what it looks like or how nutty the idea is, if your feet stay warm it’s a worthy over shoe.
Finagling your own version of a winter shoe cover is all fine and well, but I’ve found something that takes the MacGyver out of warm feet. They’re called the Castelli Diluvio Shoe Covers.

t’s that time of the year again — spring! Well, maybe it’s not exactly spring yet, but I know it’s around the corner when all the new spring/summer cycling apparel starts to roll in. Basically, it’s like Christmas around here. Besides seeing the samples months ago, this is the first time we get to see a lot of the new apparel items for the summer of 2010. New fabric technology, new colors, new chamois’, new leg grippers, new bib strap designs, new…everything! [I swear the bike clothing industry is advancing faster than any other textile business.]
Cycling Apparel Jargon and Vocabulary
Posted in Cycling Apparel Info., Cycling Information, tagged apparel, cyclists on February 8, 2010 | 1 Comment »
ycling apparel has it’s own set of vocabulary. Within the industry we throw around phrases like, ‘zipper garage’ or ‘raglan sleeve’ like it’s going out of style. The problem is that we use these words and phrases with customers — and they think we’re speaking a different language. To bring meaning and clarification to what we’re trying to say, here’s a list of cycling apparel buzz words that you might hear:
Leg gripper: band of elastic or compressive fabric at the hem of shorts to keep them in one place when cycling
Moisture wicking: fabric made to pull sweat away from your skin and push to the surface of the fabric
