Base layers are thought to be for keeping warm. When you’re heading out on a ride and a single layer isn’t enough, whether it be a jacket or jersey, you put on a base layer for a little extra warmth. So then why do you see pros wearing a base layer under their short sleeve jerseys during the hot summer months? It turns out base layers do more than keep you warm. A short sleeve or sleeveless base layer underneath your jersey does two major things for you: 1)keeps your bib straps or jersey from rubbing you raw and 2)keeps your jersey away from your skin.

The Endurance Bib Short by Castelli is a new addition to the Castelli family for 2010. And in my opinion, the greatest addition. Yes, the much-hyped Castelli Body Paint Bib Shorts are great, but I’d take the Endurance Bibs over them if I had to choose (and I’ve got both pairs).

A ride with cold feet isn’t a good ride. It doesn’t matter if your legs are sweating, you’re wearing 2 layers too much on the top, and your head is wet with sweat from a balaclava — cold fee ruin the ride. Ruin it! It seems like hardcore winter cyclist have their very own “custom made” shoe cover that might include Duct Tape, maybe plastic baggies, chemical toe warmers, or maybe a combination of toe warmers with shoe covers. It doesn’t really matter what it looks like or how nutty the idea is, if your feet stay warm it’s a worthy over shoe.
Finagling your own version of a winter shoe cover is all fine and well, but I’ve found something that takes the MacGyver out of warm feet. They’re called the Castelli Diluvio Shoe Covers.

t’s that time of the year again — spring! Well, maybe it’s not exactly spring yet, but I know it’s around the corner when all the new spring/summer cycling apparel starts to roll in. Basically, it’s like Christmas around here. Besides seeing the samples months ago, this is the first time we get to see a lot of the new apparel items for the summer of 2010. New fabric technology, new colors, new chamois’, new leg grippers, new bib strap designs, new…everything! [I swear the bike clothing industry is advancing faster than any other textile business.]

I’d say I’ve worn the Castelli Body Paint Bib Shorts between 8 and 10 times. My first thoughts were, “Man, these are lightweight” and “Man, I’m showing a lot of thigh.” That said, I am 6’2″ and have an inseam that would put giraffes to shame. As I got used to the feeling of wearing [...]
The Power of Wind-blocking Cycling Apparel

Cycling apparel, outdoor gear, or your everyday jacket — it doesn’t matter — when you add a wind-blocking element to your jacket or fleece you’re going to be warmer. I don’t think I realized this when fleece first became the choice for cold-weather insulation, but after getting a fleece jacket with GORE Windstopper I knew I wouldn’t buy another piece of outerwear that didn’t block the wind.
